Etymologically speaking, the word combines the words gastronomy, which is the study of the relationship between culture and food and the word “pub”, short for public house. In simpler terms, it means that we are a pub that specializes in serving high-quality food.

High-End Bar: The History of the Gastropub

David Eyre and Mike Belben first coined the term “gastropub” after they took over the Eagle Pub in Clerkenwell, England. Traditionally, British pubs served as drinking establishments, placing little focus on the food. If food were served, it would be something simple like a meat and cheese plate, a soggy microwaved hand pie, or sub-par fried goods. Patrons were there to drink and be drunk, so quality food didn’t matter. You ate at restaurants and drank at pubs.

David and Mike changed all that, however, when they began serving Venetian sausages with lentils, grilled goat cheese atop focaccia bread, and pan frying marinated steaks for sandwiches. Frustrated by the lack of affordable dining establishments where they could both eat and drink, they simply went and started a revolution. Within seven weeks, the pair cashed in more money than they had projected for the entire year. It was inevitable that the trend would catch on.

It was years before the first gastropub would spring up in the United States in the early 2000s and with the number opening up around the country and here in Greensboro, it’s clear that they’re here to stay.

What Kind of High-Quality Food Can I Expect At This Type Of Bar?

The menu at Bites & Pints looks like something you might find at your favorite brewpub—burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches. However, we take what you would expect and turn it up a notch. As an example, our Philly steak sandwich is made from sliced brisket, as opposed to traditional ribeye. We use this same brisket in our burgers. Where we really differentiate from typical pub fare is with our house made sauces and condiments, such as cajun bearnaise, red pepper and onion jam, and beer cheese sauce.

Our hot dogs aren’t just a stick of mystery meat slapped in between a white bread bun. No, no, we serve fancy dogs like the Asian Dog, which comes with pickled cabbage, our in-house spicy Asian mustard, and Korean red pepper ketchup, topped with wonton strips.

Vegans Can Skip The Vegetarian Restaurants

Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free friends, we haven’t forgotten about you. Vegans can skip the vegetarian restaurants for a livelier dining experience since we can substitute our meat patties for either tofu, a portabella mushroom cap, or a loaded hashbrown patty and we also offer veggie dogs.
